Get Moving with Cormack's Relocation Tips

Sep 07, 2023

When life takes you to exciting new places, it can sometimes be a little bit overwhelming if you’ve got no idea what to expect

In the early stages of planning a relocation, questions may flood your mind and it can be difficult to know where to start. At Cormack, we're familiar with the stress, logistics and costs of a long-haul move and we wanted to do some of the heavy lifting for you by gathering a few helpful tips and tricks to share with you as you start planning your journey!

Moving long-distance? Get your declutter on! The fewer belongings you have to pack and haul across the country, the better. Time may start to slip away from you as Moving Day approaches, so we recommend taking some time as soon as possible to unearth all those relics from days gone by and decide whether they need to make the journey to your new home or if someone else should find joy in them as you step into your new life (without being bogged down by junk!)

Familiarize yourself with the area prior to moving by searching for nearby grocery stores, hospitals and other businesses or facilities you’ll need or want to access. Consider the places you frequent in your current city and search for spaces to fulfill that part of your routine in your new neighbourhood. This might help you feel more connected to your new community and less like a fish out of water upon arrival!

Build a small support network for yourself and your family prior to moving by searching for and becoming a member of local community forums such as joining Facebook groups, and perusing relevant local hashtags on Instagram. By taking the time to digitally observe the community you’ll soon be joining and interact with others who already live there, you can start to get a feel for the local culture and avoid feelings of isolation, confusion and anxiety, which are often referred to as culture shock.

Get the ball rolling with your job search.  If you aren't relocating FOR work, then be sure to start your job search BEFORE you move. This will allow you to see what sort of market there is for someone with your experience in your desired community and even potentially secure a role that offers financial assistance with relocation.  These days, many Recruiters and Employers begin their interview process virtually anyways, so it definitely doesn't hurt to get the ball rolling before you actually make the move.

If you're experiencing some difficulty in your job search, head over to our Career Opportunities page after this to check out our current job postings across Canada. We'd love to help you land your dream job and there are several AMAZING opportunities available with our Clients that offer Relocation Assistance!

Bonus Tip: If you're planning to relocate in the near future, remember to take care of one small task every day to avoid overwhelming yourself during the ever-dreaded Crunch Time. Trust us, this will help you to stay on top of things and your future self will thank you for it!

Relocating to further your career doesn't need to be stressful; you're chasing a dream, so remember to have some fun throughout the journey! We wish you all the best as you set off on a new adventure.
