With the warm weather creeping in and the country continuing to reopen, many Canadians are choosing to travel again. Since the onset of Covid, many companies have allowed their employees to work remotely, which allows people to work from almost anywhere, including while on vacation. Whether you’re preparing to travel for business or pleasure, there are some important steps to take to set yourself up for success while working on the road. Let’s discuss best practice for working efficiently while travelling.

Do Your Research

When deciding on hotels, choose your booking wisely. If you anticipate spending a decent amount of time on your laptop, you want to make sure that you choose a hotel with a reliable internet connection, good internet speed, and a dedicated working space such as a desk with a proper chair. You might not be able to replicate your work or home office while on the road, but you want to be as comfortable as possible in your temporary work environment. If you were to choose a hotel that is missing any of these key amenities, you are going to be less motivated to work as you’ll be faced with many new challenges and obstacles to overcome.

Don't Forget Your Tech

When packing your suitcase, it is better to bring too much than too little. Just like you’d rather have too many outfit choices, you’d rather have all your equipment than be without it in a time of need. Pack your laptop, your chargers, your mouse, your headphones, as well as any physical documents, lists or notes that could be important while you are away. Another hot tip – make sure you write down a list of all the gear you brought so that you can cross-reference while you’re packing up to go home. This way nothing gets missed on the way to or from your destination.

Make A Schedule

If you are travelling on a proper vacation, but don’t want to get behind on emails, be sure to schedule specific time to work while you’re away. Your personal time becomes just your personal time, and your work time is just dedicated to work. Let’s say you’ve gone to Florida on a family vacation; schedule yourself to do computer work from 9am-11am, because you want to focus on a family beach day from 11am – 8pm! This way you (and your loved ones) know you’re going to get a chance to do the work you need while on vacation, which will allow you to put all of your attention on your personal activities while off the clock. It’s all about balance!

While working remotely makes it easier to travel without falling behind, travelling can certainly make it harder to work efficiently. If you take the right steps to prepare yourself, you will be set up for success every time!
