Work-life balance is something that often weighs heavy on a person. Maybe you feel like you’re concentrating too much on work and not enough on the people you love at home, or maybe you feel like you’re not giving 100% at work because you’re too focused on your personal life. Whatever the case, not having a great work-life balance can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout. This can end up having a huge effect on your mental health and your day-to-day wellbeing. Let’s talk about ways to manage your mental health in the workplace.

Take Breaks

A great place to start when it comes to managing your mental health at work is setting up time for breaks throughout the workday. It could be a 5-minute coffee break every two hours, or a 20-minute walk twice a day. A change of scenery and a chance to think about something other than work can do wonders for your mind. You will find that your levels of productivity and efficiency will improve greatly if you allow yourself time to take a break during the day, which will help prevent burnout, as well as alleviate your stresses and anxiety.

Be Realistic

Before you go home each night, make a list of realistic tasks to accomplish the next day. Keep in mind you only have so much time at work each day, so prepare goals for yourself that can reasonably be accomplished within that time frame. Having a list will allow you to use your time more efficiently and will help you feel more accomplished when you go home each day. Preparing a list will also allow you to stress less about work when you’re at home each night as you’ll be confident that you’ll be going into your next workday well prepared.

Set Boundaries to Distinguish between your Work and Personal Life

Don’t allow yourself to be available for work 24/7. Turn off your email and notifications when you are off the clock, and let your personal time belong to you and you alone. Be protective of yourself and your time so that you’re able to focus on your personal needs when you’re not at work. This will allow you to relax more easily and take advantage of your personal time in whichever way you want.

There are many things you can do to achieve a better work-life balance.
